Leavenworth prison is one of the most well-known jails in the United States. It has housed some of the most famous criminals. Originally known as the United States Military Prison, the USDB was established by Act of Congress in 1874. Prisoners were used for the bulk of the construction, which began in 1875 and was completed in 1921. The facility was able to house up to 1,500 prisoners.
