Ether metabolism

WebApr 6, 2024 · Ether is a class of organic compounds consisting of an oxygen atom that is chemically bonded to two alkyl groups or aryl groups. Ether, alcohol, and water have similar chemical structures. In alcohol, a single hydrogen atom of a water molecule is replaced by the alkyl functional group. A cytochrome P450 enzyme is proposed to metabolize diethyl ether. Diethyl ether inhibits alcohol dehydrogenase, and thus slows the metabolism of ethanol. It also inhibits metabolism of other drugs requiring oxidative metabolism. For example, diazepam requires hepatic oxidization whereas its oxidized metabolite oxazepam does not.

In organic chemistry, an epoxide is a cyclic ether, where the ether forms a three-atom ring: two atoms of carbon and one atom of oxygen. This triangular structure has substantial ring strain, making epoxides highly reactive, more so than other ethers. They are produced on a large scale for many applications.

WebThe early steps in ether lipid synthesis are confined to the DHAP backbone rather than the sn-glycerol-3-phosphate backbone. Acyl-DHAP is the required substrate for the synthesis of ether lipids, and the enzyme alkyl-DHAP synthase catalyzes an exchange of a long-chain fatty alcohol for the fatty acid esterified at the sn -1 position (see Figure ...

WebVideo transcript. One way to make ethers is to use the Williamson ether synthesis, which is where you start with an alcohol, and you add a strong base to deprotonate the alcohol. Once you deprotonate the alcohol, you add an alkyl halide, and primary alkyl halides work the best. We'll talk about why in a minute.
