The first time I took off the heat sinks on the xps, the paste was all over the place, they did a sloppy job. WebDell gives a manual for this and its basically: remove bottom cover, disconnect battery, hold power button for 20 seconds (to drain residual power), reconnect battery and install bottom cover. Then try again with less aggressive settings. I haven't tried this yet, but I suspect this should be possible.
